Bathroom doors: finish, edge and the gap underneath

Bathroom doors are often the same as in other rooms — and a year or two later the bottom of the leaf swells. Humidity in bathrooms and laundry rooms is constantly higher, so choose the material for it in advance.

Why the bottom suffers

Wood reacts to moisture: it absorbs steam and slowly changes shape. Moisture lingers longest near the floor after a shower or laundry, so the bottom edge deforms first. Poor ventilation speeds this up.

PVC film or paint

PVC film is an extra protective layer: it copes better with constant humidity and frequent wiping of splashes and condensation. Painted doors can go into a bathroom too — choose an even, high-quality finish and avoid direct contact with water.

Aluminium edge

The weakest spot is the bottom edge, closest to the wet floor. An aluminium edge around the leaf protects it from swelling and chips. For a bathroom check this first and the colour second. We offer an aluminium edge in the ETALON series (the “Aluminium edge” and INSIDE options).

The gap under the leaf

The leaf needs the right gap above the floor: it lets the room ventilate and keeps moisture from sitting against the wood. This is set during installation — agree it with your fitter in advance.

The safest choice for a bathroom, toilet or laundry room is PVC film with an aluminium edge around the leaf.
