Renovating a new build: when to think about doors

Doors take 29 working days to make, so ordering on the last day of renovation is too late and ordering at the bare-wall stage is too early. Here is how to time it.

Step by step

  1. During rough works, prepare the openings: leaf width + 70–100 mm, height + 45–70 mm.
  2. After plastering and screeding, measure the openings and wall thickness — they will not change any more.
  3. Order straight away: while the doors are being made you lay floors and paint walls and ceilings.
  4. Install the doors at the very end — after painting and the finished floor, so the leaves stay undamaged.

New-build openings are often made “with a margin”. Our leaves come in 50 mm steps with no surcharge, so an 870 mm opening does not need narrowing for an 800 mm door.

Things to consider

  • Thick walls (aerated block, insulation) — plan a 100–120 mm frame or an extension.
  • High ceilings — leaves up to 2300 mm make the room feel taller.
  • Bathroom and kitchen — PVC film and an aluminium edge handle moisture better.
  • Bedroom and study — ETALON with the sound insulation option.
