How to compare door quotes

One shop offers a door “for four thousand”, another a similar one for eight. Often it is not the mark-up: one quoted the leaf, the other the full set. Here is how to compare like with like.

A door is several items

  1. Leaf — the part that opens; its price is what adverts usually show.
  2. Frame — sits in the opening; can cost almost as much as the leaf.
  3. Architrave — covers the joint between frame and wall. Check whether one or both sides of the opening are included.
  4. Extension — deepens the frame on thick walls; almost always needed in aerated-block new builds and private houses.
  5. Routing — cut-outs for the lock and hinges plus frame fitting.
  6. Hardware — handle, hinges, lock, stopper.
  7. Delivery to you.
  8. Installation — even if the seller does not do it, it belongs in your budget.

Ask every seller to quote the same list: leaf + frame + architrave + extension + hinges + lock + handle + delivery + installation. If one quote has nine items and another three, they are simply different lists.

What to check in the leaf

  • Leaf thickness (ours is 34 or 40 mm depending on the series).
  • Finish: PVC film with ready samples or made-to-order RAL / NCS paint — paint always costs more.
  • Edge: PVC edge, aluminium edge or INSIDE profile.
  • Decor: plain leaf, moulding or milling — the more operations, the higher the price.

Frame, architrave, extension

  • Frame type: telescopic (80, 100 or 120 mm), coplanar or hidden.
  • Architrave: telescopic 80 mm, with a 40 mm wing, or coplanar.
  • Extension 100, 150 or 200 mm — measure the wall and ask whether the frame is enough without it.

Routing

A leaf without routing is cheapest, but then the fitter cuts the lock and hinges by hand on site, often by the hour. Factory routing is done on a machine with a template, and the door arrives ready to install. Routing costs more on leaves with an aluminium edge.

Two questions for every seller

  • How long does production take? During a renovation a month versus three makes a difference. Ours: 29 working days after prepayment.
  • From which date is it counted: request, contract or payment?

Sizes

Check which sizes carry no surcharge. Ours: width 400–900 mm and height 1800–2100 mm in 50 mm steps; 950–1000 mm wide and 2150–2300 mm high add 20% to the leaf, frame and extension.

Our prices are open: the calculator shows every item separately, so comparing is easy.
